Inuyasha is an extremely popular anime and manga series written by Rumiko Takahashi and set primarily in the Warring States era of Japan, but occasionally in modern-day Japan as well. The series is named after the main character, Inuyasha, which literally translates to 'dog demon'. 'Inu' is the Japanese word for 'dog', while 'Yasha' is a Buddhist term meaning 'demon' or 'demon warrior'.

Inuyasha centers around the adventures of Kagome, a girl from modern-day Japan who one day discovers a magical well on her family property that allows her to travel back in time where she meets half dog-demon Inuyasha, the monk Miroku, demon-slayer Sango, fox-demon Shippo, Inuyasha's half-brother Sesshoumaru, and the many other diverse characters that make up the Inuyasha universe.

Many years ago, in the Warring States era of Japan, the half dog-demon Inuyasha attempted to steal the Shikon no Tama (Jewel of Four Souls) because it contained the power to turn him into a full demon - his wish at the time. During his escape, he was shot with a magical arrow by the priestess Kikyo, binding him to an enchanted sleep where he would remain for 50 years until Kagome discovers him shortly after her trip through the well.

Kagome frees Inuyasha from his slumber so that he might save her from the centipede demon who discovered her in the well, and then realizes that she bears a string resemblance to Kikyo. As it turns out, she is in fact the reincarnation of Kikyo, and the bearer of the Shikon Jewel, which enabled her to pass through the well. It is also discovered much later that the reason Inuyasha and Kikyo became foes was due to the attempts by the demon Naraku to secure the Jewel for himself.

Due to a series of unfortunate events, the Shikon Jewel is broken, and pieces of it spread across the lands. As the series progresses, the primary goal of Inuyasha and the others is to recover the broken fragments of the Shikon Jewel to prevent them from falling into the hands of the evil Naraku, who wishes to use the jewel to increase his demonic power.

Another interesting character is Inuyasha's half brother Sesshoumaru. Unlike Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru is a full demon, and he has very little interest in humans. Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru do not get along very well, but occasionally they work together for the common good.

Starting off as an extremely popular manga, which is still being written today, Inuyasha also was adapted into a 167 episode anime series which aired in Japan from October 2000 to September 2004. It was not until much later that most of the episodes were shown in the United States, where it gained a huge following as well. The anime series eventually ended abruptly, with no real ending to speak of, but one must remember that the anime was only an extension of the manga, which is showing no signs of slowing down.

The Inuyasha manga started in Japan in the weekly Shonen Sunday publication by Shogakukan, with the first release in November, 1996. The series now includes over 480 chapters. Like the anime, the Inuyasha manga is also available in English and is published by Viz Communications. The first official English manga installment was released in March, 1998, with new installments being issued regularly.

The final episode of the Inuyasha anime aired in the United States on October 27, 2006. It is currently being shown in its second run, which started January 1, 2007.
